The Fit
Alfred Wegener noticed that South America and Africa fit like two pieces of a torn page, and then checked whether the writing matched across the tear: fossils, mountain belts, coal seams and glacial scratches all line up. He was dismissed for thirty years for having no mechanism, died on the Greenland ice at fifty, and was proved right by the floor of the sea. Reassemble Pangaea, switch on the evidence, and run the spreading ridge. Episode 09 of the Great Scientists series.
